AN animal shelter has offered free cat and dog adoptions.
The Jacksonville Humane Society in Jacksonville, Florida, US, said it would waive adoption fees for a week.
It said the coronavirus meant new owners and pets would bond better due to more time at home during isolation periods designed to stop the virus spreading.
The city’s Animal Care and Protective Services closed for a two-week period because of the virus meaning the Humane Society was the area’s only agency equipped to handle stray and lost pets.
Spokeswoman Lindsey Layendecker said: “This is a unique opportunity to be at home with your new pet while they adjust to new surroundings.
“Pets keep us in good spirits and help maintain normalcy and routine.
“Even if you cannot adopt, this is a great time to serve your community by providing a foster home to a pet in need.”
