A PETA activist was arrested after stealing a chicken from an overturned trailer.
Amber Canavan grabbed the chicken from the truck carrying 5,000 chickens claiming she wanted to free it from cruelty.
Activists sped to the scene after the truck overturned near Battle Ground, Washington. But police arrested Ms. Canavan when she refused to give up the chicken.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn said animal rights activists ambushed the scene of the crash. He said when one of the chickens started to walk down an embankment Canavan grabbed it and refused several times to return it. A trooper then arrested Canavan of Portland. She told them she is a member so PETA.
In a news release, Direct Action Everywhere said it and another group, The Save Movement, had gone to the scene to document what happened and to care for the chickens.
Finn said Canavan faces charges of theft and failure to obey a police officer. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn’t hurt.
