McDONALD’S has stunned burger fans by announcing a vegan meal.
Veggie Dippers – made using red peppers, rice, sun-dried tomato pesto and split peas and dipped in breadcrumbs – will go on sale in 2020.
The full meal will come with fries and the dippers will be fried in oil that has not come into contact with items containing meat.
One loyal customer said: “A veggie Big Mac meal – whatever next?”
Thomas O’Neill, head of food marketing at McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: “In the last 12 months we’ve seen an 80 per cent uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald’s, so it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers.” The launch follows the success of Greggs’ vegan sausage roll.
In June, KFC launched “the impostor” burger, made from a meat substitute and coated in a batter of herbs and spices.
